Tree Stand Safety
10. If you happen to fall while holding your weapon (whether it is a bow and arrows, or a firearm) try to throw them away from youself to prevent falling on top of them.
9. If you are trying to fasten or unfasten a ladder stand to a tree by yourself, make sure that you stabilize the ladder with ropes or chains BEFORE you climb the ladder. This is to prevent it from twisting and sliding off of the tree.
8. Don't hunt from tree stands when lightning moves into the area or on extremely windy days. Be aware of any possible weather changes before you head out to your stand, and pay close attention if there is any bad weather nearby. Remember, most lightning strikes outside of the rain. Even if there are no expected rain clouds, strong winds can snap branches and break trees. Even if the tree you are in is sturdy, the trees around you might not be.
7. Rubber boots get very slippery when wet and muddy. Be careful climbing a tree with wet/muddy rubber boots and consider bringing another pair of footwear to put on when you get to your stand.
6. Avoid dead or rotting trees when installing tree steps. Never leave steps in a tree from year to year. Temperature changes can put a lot of stress on the steps and they can crack and wear.
